To Slope Or Not To Slope, That Is The Question

To Slope Or Not To Slope, That Is The Question

We often get asked “do you slope the gutter or just install it level”? The answer to this question is simple, we slope it. How much? We follow a strict 1/4” per 10’ slope and achieve this through the use of levels. Simply eyeballing or measuring will give you undesirable results. Many homes, especially older homes, will have “sag spots” in the roof. In fact, almost no roofline is straight and level. These sagging or raised areas could be anywhere on the run of fascia where the gutter will be attached. If a sag spot is where the high point of your gutter is, you might have to drop the gutter in the downspout locations significantly. In some cases, the gutter could be past the threshold of staying under the drip edge rendering the gutter non functional. An experienced gutter installer will know how to remedy this problem and possibly recommend alternative downspout locations.

The most common mistake we see from other gutter companies is using a tape measure to apply the slope. Without employing a level, you will never acheive the proper flow. This can actual lead to standing water in the gutters and even cause damage to your gutters, home or business. If you are a homeowner, installing seamless gutters is a project that should be left to the professionals. More often than not, they can actually be less expensive than doing it yourself. Additionally, you will have a better quality product that will protect your home for years. Call us today for all of your gutter installation needs! 850-343-3228 or contact us
